It does grind the food, BUT it leaves a large mass of unground food at the bottom when you're done. I think this is there to ensure no bones, cartilage, etc. get through. I never intend on putting anything with bones in the food mill anyways! I also do not like the shape of the top of the grinder. I know it's elongated so it travels more easily, but its shape makes it difficult to get all of the ground food out. The rubber gasket does not seal as well as the old model's, either. I have to take it off every time I wash it as food gets stuck underneath. The handle could be a bit longer too, but it has to be short so the cover fits on it.Aside from the negative aspects of the food mill, I do like that it has a metal grate with blade, rather than plastic. My older food mill has a plastic grate. If I could combine my old food mill with a metal grate/blade, I would be... I think maybe the normal plastic mode of this baby food mill can leave no steel or iron residue from the blade. For foods with long fiber and juice it does not work well.
