5.0 out of 5 stars KidCo Baby Steps is a great product!, November 30, 2009

This review is from: KidCo BabySteps Basic Natural Feeding System (Baby Product)
This excellent product allows me to easily make healthy, tasty, homemade baby food puree with minimal effort and quick clean up! My daughter is new to solid food and the KidCo processor is able to make very smooth purees when some liquid is added to the cooked food. Clean up is a snap because the motor is housed in the lid and the other parts are dishwasher safe. Some reviewers were displeased with the lack of an on-off switch; but in actuality, pressing the motor housed in the lid activates the blades. The turbo feature can be pulsated for a finer puree. Some reviewers also found that the lid sticks; this happened to me once and I realized that you must use caution when twisting the lid into place. If it does get stuck, turn it gently in the opposite direction to reallign the tabs and it will pop right off. I was also quite pleased with the freezer trays. Some reviewers found that it was difficult to remove the food cubes, (yummy squash-pops!)but I simply gave it a light spray with... Read more

My son and daughter-in-law are quite particular about what goes into their 10-month-old's tummy and I'm all behind that, so more often than not, I make him something from scratch for lunch when he and his mommy pop in. I'd been using my little Cuisinart Mini-Prep-Processor to grind everything up, but it wasn't quite going the distance and left lots of chunks bigger than he could cope with. I read the reviews of the KidCo BabySteps Basic Natural Feeding System and decided to buy one, even though I tend to be something of a penny pincher when I think I can get away with it. Now I wish I'd had this from the start. It really purees everything from bananas to chicken and clean-up is dead easy since the motor is in the top and never gets near the food. I could have done without the freezer trays, since we make all his food fresh and don't use a microwave on his food as we would have to do to warm it over, but I was so delighted with how easy this was to use and how well it works that I got... This is an awesome product! It's super easy to use and clean. I have no problems at all with the trays. You don't need to use any olive oil spray either... just give the tray a gentle twist and the frozen foods pop right out. It blends everything very smoothly. Even peas, green beans and carrots. I cannot say enough good things about it. I use it all the time. My daughter is ten months and is ready for thicker and chunkier foods and this works well for those too. Though you do have to be careful not to overheat the motor when making thicker foods.

I was surprised by how small it actually is, however the product works well. I think the directions need to be more detailed, and come with more specific water amounts to add for the fruits/veggies. The blade is very sharp and works well, I am pleased with the overall performance of the product. I have sucessfully made several meals with the machine. Compared to the significant price break vs. the competitor version of this (which my friend has) I feel I can do all the things with my machine and feel like I got a good value. I am enjoying this product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great thought, April 11, 2010

This review is from: The First Years Babypro All In One Baby Food Maker (Baby Product)
Opposite my friends advice I bought this instead of a more expensive Kitchen Aid food processor. I figured half the price half the work right? The processor part has a great blade and is very efficient for it's tiny size.

HOWEVER, I found that is you are making more than 1 or 2 serving for your little one, The steamer has a hard time fully steaming the batch. I found my self running it 2 and sometimes 3 times after "rotating" the food in the steamer. I only had it fully steam something ( half the steamer / maybe half a cup) once... and it was Peas. Each steam session is between 5 and 15 minutes depending on the amount of water required, which is very hard to figure out. I tried the max recommended thinking it was just not cooking long enough and it barely made a difference. Definitely not a time saver

The instructions say to cut food into 1/2 inch cubes, fine for carrot or green beans, but if you have ever cut sweet potatoes or squash this is by no means an easy... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars needs better instructions, April 9, 2010

when I first got mine out to use it I thought it was broken because the steamer light wouldn't stay on. Then I looked up FAQ's on learning curve's website and the container that does not have holes in the bottom that looks like it is supposed to hold water is not where you put the water. The water goes directly onto the heating plate. When I was searching online I found a lot of people had this problem, the directions are not very clear. But it does work. The food processor half also makes more smooth baby food than my old food processor. However, the price has jumped for some reason after I purchased mine and I don't know if I would buy one now. And it is a small gadget so you can't make much baby food at a time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Slacker Mom's dream, February 25, 2009

I love this gadget. Compact, all-in-one, easy to use, FOOL PROOF, and ... gives me the CONFIDENCE to make my baby's food.

I've read tons of web reviews and blogs about this product, and detractors seem to miss/misunderstand my 'category' of mom. I cook when I can. I bake when I get the chance but... mostly, I dont have the time or confidence to pull it off anything 'new'... AND clean up multiple utensils!

So many blogs out there chastise the Beaba buyers for wasting money--telling us to buy cheap steamer inserts and dust off our blenders, food processors and food mills... For my first baby, I listened to these moms (and the Beaba wasnt in the USA yet). I bought the food mill; I pulled out the steamer insert... and.. I froze. My baby ate NOTHING BUT JARRED (organic) FOOD! till she could chew the foods in my comfort zone. Baby food, all the prep and the coordination of all these tools was all so daunting. I was terrified I'd get it wrong... or couldnt keep... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful especially if you have a small kitchen, one safety concern though, January 26, 2009
This review is from: Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker
I live in a small apartment and don't have room for lots of gadgets (not even a microwave). I find this appliance to be worth the counter space. I like that you can steam and puree in one appliance, and that I don't have to lug out the steamer and blender to whip up some food.

Some reviewers say your baby will outgrow this machine's usefulness in a few months but I disagree. My baby eats mostly finger foods but still I use the Beaba a lot. I use it to reheat leftovers (again, we have no microwave) and also use it to chop or puree adult dinners that are two hard for baby to eat.

It's not a huge capacity but that doesn't bother me. After spending whole weekends steaming, blending and freezing veggies, just to discover that my kid's taste buds changed and what he once loved he now refuses, I'm over large scale baby food production.

One safety note! There is a little hole that the lid clicks into. That hole leads to the water chamber and I once... Read more

This review is from: Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker
This is the first product review I have been compelled to put on Amazon. Bought this because most prepared baby food is disgusting and I wanted an easy way to serve fresh food to our son. This product was highly reviewed and I like gadgets so it seemed like a good fit. It worked well in the sense that it was convenient and cooked baby food, but after about 3 weeks, I noticed that the water used for steaming was brown and sweet smelling. I looked in the reservoir and noticed brown grime on all of the metal and a sickly sweet smell. I assumed (unfairly) that my mother-in-law had mistakenly put food into the reservoir hole and then was embarrassed to say anything, so I cleaned the unit with vinegar as per the instructions and tried again. We've only had the unit since Feb 2010, use it only 2-3 times a week and now had the same problem 3-4 different times. The water used to cook the food is brown and disgusting and I have cleaned (physically scraped) brown grim the reservoir... Read more
